Artist Bio & Statement
Mary Lowe’s painting focuses on the visual qualities of watercolour pigment, dropping water and salt application. As she experiments, she discovers images hidden within the painting.
The Concept of Mary’s paintings is to play with the visual qualities of watercolour pigment, dropped in water, with salt applied in areas. She works to discover images hidden within the painting and develop them. Whimsical Meanderings are 14 paintings on a full watercolour sheet, which can be displayed in total or in part. Each painting is 36 x 27 inches, framed and ready to hang.
Mary has discovered a new passion in painting. One that frees her from replication and opens up an intuitive freedom, where the paint takes her for a ride.
It is never ending fun looking for images found in the movement of watercolour pigment and salt on damp paper. The paint makes suggestions and she develops the images or decorative lines it suggests.
Playing with landscape, space and forms creates a whimsical tapestry, a kind of Where’s Waldo in watercolour.
Mary’s paintings are not grasped in an instant. They need a meandering eye to discover the partially hidden images. She looks at her paintings and rediscovers images all over again. It is lots of fun!
