THE SHAWL was painted in March 2020 as a way of quelling my feelings of anxiety in response to the Covid pandemic. As we in society tried to comprehend the severity and scope of the virus, we became aware that our lives were complicated by many unknowns and uncertainties. We were exposed, stripped and robbed of our sense of control. THE SHAWL was the my attempt to protect my loved ones from the onslaught utilizing the symbolism of the shawl, a cloak like cape, to shield us. The elements of design and pattern in this vibrant and colourful painting are reminiscent of Gustav Klimt whose masterful art makes my artistic heart sing!
